A sad loss... although his 'Shane Fenton' period was relatively brief, I shall always remember him as such.

Just heard a mini bio on Alvin Stardust on the BBC Radio 1:00 p.m. news and not one mention of Shane Fenton...

Martin.

One of those acts that prepared the road for The Beatles. Shane Fenton and The Fentones BBC radio sessions give a fuller picture of one of the best pre-Beatle UK acts. I think the first track of theirs i heard was Sparkling Brown Eyes and i was blown away. Their records were produced for Parlophone at Abbey Road by George Martin and some feature the overdubbed piano/double tracked vocals that would be prominent on many Fab records. The Fentones were an excellent band. I would love to have seen Shane and The Fentones in the 60s...i bet they were a really good live act. Thanks Shane.

Just been listening to BBC Essex and they have given a very good tribute to Alvin/Shane.

His real name was Bernard Drury and he joined a band of school mates called The Fentones. Their singer used the name Shane Fenton and their parents sent off an audition tape to the BBC. They didn't hear anything for months and in the meantime the original Shane had died from a long standing heart disease. The BBC wanted to audition them live, so the original Shane's parents asked the band to go ahead in memory of their son. Bernard became the lead singer, inherited the Shane Fenton name and the rest is history!!

My favourite track of Shane Fenton and the Fentones was Cindy's Birthday.
