Hi All

Are there any good tutorials out there that explain how to play the high bridge part for The Frightened City

I found a demo by a French guy and although he plays the part quite slowly and very well, he doesn't actually explain how he achieves the back picking flick

Can anyone assist

Regards

Must be someone on Utube which is usually a good resource for this type of thing these days ?

What's the 'high bridge part'? ......... and what's the 'back picking flick '?

I think you have to have a 'Back-Flicking Pick' to do back picking flicks ...... er ..... or was it backing-packing flips ? Best ask Mr. Alan.

has to be something lost in translation here, in all the years I've been playing I've never heard of 'high bridge part' or 'back picking flick'.

Then you lead far too sheltered a life sir and should really get out more!

(LOL, as the young folk say.)

Isn't it obvious ???? Highbridge is a small town in Somerset .......

to reply sensibly to a new member's first post .....

does this help ? it's a slowed down wav of the solo (which I assume you refer to as the "highbridge" part)

Frightened City Solo Slow

As for back flicking, I think my prolapsed disc would prevent that .........

I think I know what he means by the back-flicking thing. It's like a quick raking action in reverse, which Hank uses quite a lot. He certainly uses it in The Frightened City, The Savage and Please Don't Tease solos.

Martin.

Hi Jon,

It's really not that difficult.

It's played around the 12/14th frets on the top four strings and the 'flicky' bit is a little mixture of upstroke with the pick and pull offs on the 3rd string. Easier to demonstrate than to describe.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Terry

I saw Hank do this upward plectrum thing live and in close up during the wild solo of the song 'Nine times out of ten'.
I think it was in a long compilation of early black and white Cliff R. songs somewhere on YouTube.
Play it at half speed (my HTML5 player can do that; I am not sure Flash players do that?)
