As an avid non-watcher of Coronation Street (no, I have NEVER watched it!) I was both surprised and slightly alarmed to find myself watching 'The Road to Coronation Street' last night on the DRAMA channel. My excuse is that it was a docu-drama about the genesis of the programme and therefore quite interesting. I was rewarded by this by having the pleasure of hearing not one but TWO Shadows tunes played during the programme as background music. The Savage was played in its entirety and a few minutes later. almost all of FBI. So good to hear these tunes given such prominence during a programme about one of our cultural icons. The programme itself was surprisingly engaging, with some great performances.

I'm still not going to watch Coronation Street, though...

Coronation Street came to the TV screen in very late 1960 (my grandmother was an instant fan). Neither FBI nor (especially) The Savage had been issued.

If I recall correctly, that programme detailed the genesis of the soap opera and the first few transmitted episodes, so dealt with the period up to December 1960.

<shrug>

In the early days of Eastenders, Apache would often be played on the Queen Vic's jukebox - and that started in 1985!

Come to think of it, it might have been The Frightened City and NOT The Savage! I always get those two confused! (Must be old age!!!!)
