Last night i was looking through the Victor Rust book as i wanted to get the recording date of Sweet Dreams and was surprised when he said that 'it wasn't very good'. I think it's a lovely little instrumental, i even have it on my mp3 player. Am i in a minority or does everyone else like it?

I like Sweet Dreams and play it frequently when practicing, though it's not too well known outside Shadows circles. :)

I play it and it has always been one of my most favourite Shads' tunes. 'Not very good'?! Nonsense!!!

Well I hope he and his mates don't read that! Victor Rust writes books, many of them about recording artistes and their work.

Sweet Dreams (just to clear this up: the correct title really is Sweet September) is, without a doubt, the best thing the Shadows recorded in 1962, bar none.

PS: 24th July 1962.

PPS: I have most Shadows (and Cliff/Shadows) recording dates in an Excel file.

I understand that Victor is the son of Brian Rust.

Brian is a noted historian of the sound recording world, perhaps best known for his contribution to "The Guinness Book of Recorded Sound" (which is an excellent read):

PS: Other good books on the history of record companies (from the very early Edison days up into the mp3 age) include:

"The Rise And Fall Of EMI Records" by Brian Southall and

"Where Have All The Good Times Gone?" by Louis Barfe.

Louis's book is a wonderful, detailed, history. I haven't finished it yet.

Sweet Dreams - great tune, I remember playing it when it came out in 1962 when I was 14 and still a paper kid but our rhythm player , similarly aged 14 , had problems with the chords.
It's hardly a rhythm players dream is it ?

It's not a bass player's dream either! You can't busk Sweet Dreams, you have to know the part.
