Never heard this before but it got played on Radio 2 earlier on tonight whilst I was driving. An interesting take on a classic song.....I would admit to being mildly distracted!

Try there : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQjriTRyQ6E

It's announced as a Bert Weedon cover !

I prefer this one by Tommy Seebach : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6tnj7IEI0E

Why the sitar? They must have been thinking about the wrong sort of Indians!

Must admit the Tommy Seebach version is hilarious. Typical 70's!

The whole Byron Lee thing is very typical of that music style - I liked the refrains of the intro reappearing and the bass part is lovely though I'm probably biased as I like reggae - having grown up with its dulcet bass tones emerging from flappy 18" speakers in pubs in the midlands, along with the crash of dominoes hurled on to tables Caribbean style, and strange smelling cigarette smoke palling out of the doors, in my youth.

The Tommy Seebach version is indeed hilarious and camp as .... Carry on Camping - remarkably true to the original with the exception of the embryonic disco bass and drums etc - and that dancing and those clothes. There was definitely some dreadfully naff stuff in a decade of probably the largest quantity of marvellous and memorable music to grace the planet. The 60s had its naff stuff amongst the good stuff as well though - anyone remember the Singing Nun - there were lots of others!!!

I particularly like his "dancing squaws", the Shadows should have thought of this for their stage acts ! ;)

I got The Singing Nun's record Dominique for Christmas 1963, along with Geronimo, I Want To Hold Your Hand and one or two others, including a single by Steptoe And Son - and still have them all.

It would be wrong to under-estimate the attraction the record exerted at the time, especially to the denizens of Catholic grammar schools.

I was always fascinated by the French lyric and thought I could hear "Angleterre" in there somewhere. Years later, it was all confirmed on the internet. That bit is about King John (a contemporary of St Dominic, apparently).
