Hi Gary

As you say, interesting. Is it known what the occasion was and what the purpose was in playing without backing?

And what Strat was he using (not one of his better known models - maple neck, chrome hardware)?

Cheers.

Tony

Hi Tone..I dont know what the accasion was here...Im sure someone else here will know...The strat is a 58 strat that he bought in 1980 in France and would have been used on a lot of recordings.I think he used it for two songs on the latest cd...Gary

I'd date that clip at sometime around 1982. Hank looks about the age he was when he issued the "Words And Music" LP, and is wearing the same decorative necklet and using the same guitar as those pictured on the original (vinyl and cassette) artwork for that 1982 solo LP. Just before or approximately coincident with the live "Abbey Road" recording (summer of that year).

PS: I agree on the guitar; it's the one bought from Patrice Bastien.

Without ploughing through my video collection... I think this was a tv show in Scandinavia - as a competition, Hank played snippets of Shadows hits and viewers had to guess the titles.

Hi All.

George & Jim are quite right on that.
Hank was in Denmark promoting "Don´t Talk" in a danish popshow called HIT.
Danish host, Jørgen De Mylius asked Hank if he could play some of The Shads old stuff
without backing.. and so he did.

Kindest regards

Walt, I assume you mean playing alone? Mmmmmm....I wonder how Tommy Emmanuel manages to achieve at least similar results at his live performances and make it look 'easy'............

Hi ,
I have seen Tommy live many times,to anyone who has not,if you ever have the chance don't pass it up. He was actually supposed to appear at Shadowmania one year but the date was changed and he couldn't rearrange. He often pays tribute to the Shads in his shows and did play Shads music in his early days and often does a small medley of same. I have heard his brother may be even better!!

Des,

You should really cut Tommy some slack y'know, after all he did start out as a drummer! His brother Phil knows his way around a guitar too, of course! ;)
