Dance with...

My son has just returned from celebrating his 40th down in Cannes. While strolling through a market he found a French 10inch LP called “Dance with The Shadows” (Columbia FP1139. Like any good son would do, he brought it back for me! The front cover is a familiar photo of the Shads (almost identical to their first LP) and is in quite good condition. There are 10 tracks, beginning with Shadoogie & ending with Big Boy. The vinyl record itself is in a very good condition, no scratches or warps, but is not dated. I assume it was probably released in ’61. So I’ll now go & wind up the gramophone & have a listen!

I bought that album in Arles, France in 1962. It must've been released earlier than October as my school trip to Arles was at Easter 1962. The album has the same tracks as the eponymous first album minus the vocal tracks and 'Stand Up And Say That'.

The French 10" LP "Dancing With The Shadows" (FP 1139, mono) was released in 1961 (according to the discography of the French Shadows club).
The 10" "Out Of The Shadows" (FP 1143 mono, SFOF 1002 stereo) was released in October 1962 (according to the same discography).
Probably the person who entered the information at the 45worlds site mixed these two dates.

Hi Ulrich ;)

I think you are right, because and like many other french fans, I bought this 10" LP Mono in (I think) the end of 61.
It was the first time (for France...) that we can see the faces of The Shadows... and the guitars that they really played !
The whole french books 4 songs 45 rpm records before, showed Edmong or Jacobacci guitars...
So, and with "HBM" engraved on the red guitar many thought that the lead guitar was an "HBM" !!!
No body did not know exactly what a Fender Stratocaster might be...
In addition, this 10" LP Dance With The Shadows won: Le Grand Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros... My record has (and always has !) this mention added of its book.

I also remember that I was only able to buy the english and full version in Stereo of this same LP record in 64 or 65...

Best regards
Patrice

I bought this record when it was issued in France (I don't have it anymore), this was in 1961. At this time it was available in mono only. Il contains all the instrumental tracks from the Shadows' first album. For some strange reasons, all vocal tracks were removed from the french release, so a 10" disc was enough !
The same thing was done for the second album in 1962, again on a 10" disc, but it was also available in stereo (I still have it).
I later bought in England the Shadows' first album 12" stereo version.

I see the issue date has now been amended to 1961 on the site!
