I don't know if this best describes what i'm after, but basically it where the tune plays while the guitar tab displays and lights the sting on screen? Just wondering if theres any sources of this type of learning ? I use a program called rock prodigy for general learning in this way but theres no option for importing tab and theres no shads tunes on it.

To answer my own question i have come across Jellynote - Tabs & Sheet Music this seems to do what i want although just testing it. Available for android and ios , does loads of genres but i'm only interested in The Shadows at the Moment. Hope this is of use to someone looking for the same thing as me.

Yes, many a good record ruined by repeatedly drying to drop the needle in just the right spot to find the phrase you were learning! Never had tabs when I was learning, thank goodness. I've always felt that time spent learning your fretboard pays dividends when you want to pick out a tune that's only in your head. Similarly, although I have at times regretted not learning to read music properly, I have a sneaky feeling that playing by ear has made me a better player than I would have been if I'd had formal training. Discuss?!

I couldn't agree more, Noel. I learnt to read music in the church choir a couple of years before I even picked up a guitar & learnt to play it from scores available at the time. My one regret is that my improvisation & 'play by ear' skills are lessened as a result!

I wouldn't consider myself a sight reader though I can get the pitches and timings from sheet music but it's a laborious process. Tab can help but I don't find it that reliable and sometimes it will offer an unplayable chord shape or strange fingerboard positions. However, I think it's good to have some theory knowledge especially basic harmony and chord construction, the differences between major and minor and some scales and arpeggios. If your ears are good enough you will probably get most of this from just playing and working out the best fingerboard positions for tunes/phrases. So for me, ears first supported by written music and a bit of theory.

Interesting thing for me has been that, in the many years of being my own teacher I have, on a number of occasions 'invented' techniques which I later learned were common practice!
