Embassy records? The steve Stannard Group (welsh comedian stan stennett). Bud Ashton, believed to be Bert weedon though he officially denies it!. Woolies were in partnership with Oriol records and every week would have a meeting to decide which new releases would be hits. those were the ones that were recorded on a thursday and released on the monday. wonder how many times they got it wrong! Sorry for thread drift.

Mike - this has come up before. "Steve Stannard" was definitely nothing to do with that Welsh star (hailing from Splott) of the "Radio Fun" comic (and stalwart of "Workers' Playtime"), Stan Stennett.

Neither Steve Stannard nor Bud Ashton actually existed. The instrumentals on the Embassy label were usually performed by a combination of Bob Rogers (gtr) and Ted Taylor (kbds), augmented as necessary.

Who ever thought that Bert Weedon was on those records? The recordings sound nothing like him!

Don't worry Mike! You're right in that the site once suggested that Stan Stennett and Bert Weedon were amongst Embassy artists working under pseudonyms - although Bert was only thought to have 'moonlighted' on very few tracks. However later research and discussions proved beyond reasonable doubt that the earlier assertions were plausible but incorrect.

Never Steve Stannard, but a great player all the same.

The adjective 'versatile' barely seems to sum up the man, a true one-off entertainer. Surprisingly, he made very few recordings, at least under his own name.
