Just caught a bit of the newer version of The Alamo' on TV and, knowing that the Shads visited the place early on, I wondered if their 'Gonzales' was just the use of a well known Mexican name - or was it dedicated to the men from the village of Gonzales who volunteered en masse to join the Alamo.

Seeing as we have 'Santa Ana', 'Return to' and Jet's 'San Antonio' it seems the place had quite an impact on them?

"Gonzales" is a well-known name in Mexico, but it's a surname and calling a tune after a surname is unusual.

We can imagine tunes called Ronnie, Jennie, Miranda or even Our Albert, but calling a song Hughes, Thompson, Cunningham or Isherwood seems less likely.

Place names do seem much more likely than surnames, and as you say "Gonzales" is a Texas town about 65 miles from San Antonio and The Alamo (which we know the Shadows visited in 1960 or so).
