Great early 70s footage...

Postby drakula63 » 07 Feb 2016, 00:37

Now THIS is interesting...

Firstly for the version of Something, which I am guessing must either be from a Marvin and Farrar gig or a TV appearance.

And secondly for the really great footage of Hank wielding his green Burns Marvin. I am guessing that this would be from around 1970 and my guess is he's playing Goodnight Dick or Sunday for Seven Days...

Hi Chris,

The recording of Something is from the Marvin & Farrar side of the Cliff in Japan double LP - which I believe also came out on one of the Italian Fremus 'bootleg' CDs in the 90s - I think. The film of Hank playing his green Marvin is from Cliff in Scandinavia; he is playing Something and you can see it here...

...although there is another 'edit' of this programme without the filmed inserts of the Viking horn!

Incidentally, the Cliff in Japan double album is worth tracking down as the whole Marvin & Farrar set is superb - especially their version of Keep the Customer Satisfied - which they used to do in their Marvin, Welch, Farrar days (you can see that at the end of Getaway with Cliff (they're all driving along in a Triumph Stag!!)which is also on the You of the Tube!) The Cliff Goes East double LP is similar but - annoyingly - doesn't include Keep the Customer Satisfied or Something...

Thanks folks!

That'll teach me to read the small print!!!

That clip from Cliff in Scandinavia is absolutely MAD!!! I can't yet decide whether it's funny or not -- but therein is the proof that Cliff wears a wig!!! (well, he did then anyway!)

I've actually got the Cliff in Japan album that you mention and strangely it didn't occur to me that this was the source of the audio. So it'll be Trevor Spencer on drums and Alan Tarney on bass.

Thanks again.

Hi! Chris,
you mentioned some footage of Goodnight Dick/SFSDays. Is that on a separate link? Could you post it?
Cheers,
Mart

Sorry. I was just 'guessing' that Hank might have been on TV at some point playing those two pieces. he may have been, I suppose, but I don't have any links to such.

A shame that the performance of Something from the Cliff TV show was intercut with those, to be honest unfunny, location shots. The version Hank played was clearly based on the Shads' version from Shades of Rock, which again leads to some disappointment (and surprise) that it wasn't performed with the remainder of the band. Oh well.

Nice shots of Hank's green Burns, i guess this is the one that went missing shortly afterwards.

It's one of two which went missing in 1972.
