Recording to Laptop

Whilst my portastudio is in for repair I thought I would investigate the 21st century.

Bearing in mind I've only just learnt how to use a push button phone can anyone advise me on the basics (and it will have to be basic) of recording to computer.

e.g. Is it possible to record a live performance (guitar + backing track) by micing into a USB port and what, if any, software would be required?

Any help/comments would be appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation.

Kind regards

If you are talking about a standard laptop using Windows or iOS, Terry, it should be easy enough.

Has the machine got a stereo mini-jack input?

You don't have to use such an input (you could buy an external soundcard with jacks which attaches to the laptop via USB, for instance), but you ought to be able to get acceptable results from the input - if you have one.
