Name of Bert Weedon instrumental???

Postby Gatwick1946 » 25 Sep 2016, 10:29

Hi Folks,

I turned on my car radio this morning (24th Sept), and caught the end of an instrumental - it was on BBC2 Sound of the 60's.
I thought it sounded like a Bert Weedon track, but not one that I have heard before. It was played at about 0815 - did anyone happen to catch the title - which presumably, Brian Matthew mentioned at the start?

Kindest regards,
Christopher

It's listed as Bert Weedon - Lonely Guitar.

I think it was the B side of Apache. I went to watch Bert Weedon perform at Great Wyrley in the early seventies. ( Great Wyrley was once the home of the Hankies ). I asked Bert about Apache. He replied that Hank had also had a hit with Apache. Bert was, not only an excellent guitarist, he was also a true showman.

Cheers, Alan.

Thanks Alan and Pete,

I have a couple of Bert's CD's, but Lonely Guitar was not included, and I had not previously heard it.

Like 1000's of others I started off with Bert's "Play in a Day" tutor, years ago, but am not familiar with many of his recordings. I have taken more interest recently because, to my ears, Bert sort of bridges the gap between the jazz/big band era of the 1930s/1940s,and the rock and roll of the 1950s/1960s.

Kindest regards
Christopher

I just found Lonely Guitar on YouTube:

Bit jazzy for my tastes, but I imagine it would sound quite good if done in a more Shadows style.

With some nice Mellotron flutes in the middle section. Now there's a little recording project for me this weekend. (To go with all the others I haven't done yet.)
