Don't Talk

Postby Fenderman » 30 Sep 2016, 20:20

I know Hank had a minor hit with Don't Talk in 1982 but i believe this was originally written with Cliff in mind.
Does anyone know if Cliff actually recorded it? It would be interesting to see how he approached it.

That's a new one on me. I suppose it's possible, although the lyric isn't an obvious one for Cliff.

What with Dont Talk To Him and We Don't Talk Any More, it could form a neat trilogy!

Mind you, anything's possible. He did do Let Me Be The One, although it had a different tune and different words!

No Cliff didn't record it, but a friend of mine has a version of it (possibly the demo) by the original composer, Terry Britten. The sleeve note suggests that Terry's vocal is better than Hank's... :o

Cliff of course recorded YOU NEVER CAN TELL as the B-side of Goodbye Sam and later GALADRIEL on Dressed For the Occasion but has never recorded DON'T TALK. In the day a lot of songs were passed around the Peter Gormley office and ONJ and CR recorded several "in house" songs by various Shadows. Terry Britten often allegedly would play riffs in CLIFF'S presence and get his attention and thus a song was placed. Never heard his version of this though.

Yeah, I knew that 'Don't Talk' was originally intended for Cliff. Maybe he didn't like it? I suspect that the same might be true of 'The Trouble With Me Is You' - both similar sort of songs and not really the sort that have 'Hank Marvin' written all over them.

Never really liked 'The Trouble.....'
I did like most of the Words and Music album but found the follow up a bit disappointing.

Agreed. It sounded (All Alone With Friends) like a very expensively produced album from Cliff or maybe Sheena Easton. I heard it again recently and, to be honest, I liked it a bit more than I had when I heard it the last time. There are one or two good songs on it, but mostly it sounds like a project that Hank was shoe-horned into rather than a natural successor to Words and Music. Even the front cover is a rip off of the Phil Collins-style album covers from that time.
