It has been doing the rounds for at least twenty years (in mono, though a stereo version exists).

The Peel "Sounds On Sunday" session was going to be included on a Fremus CD (Italy) in about 1995, because Italian copyright law allowed live recordings to go out of strict copyright after twenty or twenty-five years, with a responsibility for any publisher to pay "a reasonable amount of money" to the artiste(s). Then, Italian law changed so that it became the same as elsewhere in the EU.

Because they could not issue the double-CD "The Shadows On The AIr" as planned (it was to be a double-CD with loads of live recordings), Fremus had no further use for the already-compiled master-tape and a DAT tape of it found its way to the UK. The version to be used had been a mono off-air recording, in fairly reasonable quality, presumably from Radio 1 FM.

Yeah, it's a secret!

(Someone did me a copy about 20 years ago! I think at least some of it MUST be on youtube by now!)

I'm trying to remember/work out the year I saw H Puff Puff played at the Albert Hall and I seem to recall a technician was charging around the stage trying to get some weird stereo sound or lighting effects going. Maybe ''Love De Luxe'' was played as well - and possibly 'Argentina' before it's release? Would that be right - and that makes it 1978?

(I do wish I'd kept a record of all the gigs I've been to as it would be fascinating to look back)

Yeah, it can only have been 1978.

Bizarrely, I have got some footage from that gig on DVD - but only in Black and White...

Assuming you mean the Albert Hall gig..

Cliff Hall.

His usual arsenal from that time - although it's been a while since I watched it. He used to use an ARP Pro-Soloist and ARP String Esemble Synth and Yamaha CS-80.

Just a guess there.

On the John Peel session, I suspect that it was either or both Brian and John on the synth and piano. No idea what they were using, but, again, probably an ARP from the early 1970s.

When did Francis Monkman last play the Albert Hall with them - I've always thought I saw him there but if it was '78 that would have been Cliff H would it not?

Francis Monkman only played keyboards with The Shadows during the 1977 "20 Golden Dates" tour. From the autumn 1977 tour on, Cliff Hall was on keyboards.

It was just Brian on keyboards for the John Peel session (December 1973). I'm fairly sure that this is stated during the "interview" part of the broadcast.
