Tour Date Help

Postby Unsospero » 31 Jan 2021, 00:15

Unless the grey matter has finally given in, I distinctly remember seeing the Shads at the Royal Festival Hall in London. I remember Bruce sang Three Times a Lady so the concert would have been pre Moonlight Shadows because I was a little disappointed that it wasn't a vocal when I purchased the CD.
I'm guessing it was early late 70s because money was tight in the early 80s when the kids came along.

Anyone help so I can add it to my list?

Thanks

Graham

Three Times A Lady (as a vocal) was included in the concert set-list in 1978.

Thanks Jim & Ulrich

I certainly have that tour brochure but it still leaves me with a dilemma.

I have distinct memories of the Royal FESTIVAL Hall on the South Bank which doesn't appear on the list of venues. I have only ever seen one concert there (I think) and my wife has similar memories. At that time I would only have seen either The Shads or Cliff.

Could it have been a one off, perhaps charity gig?

Hi Graham,

I have checked my lists from the 70s and 80s.
During these two decades the Shadows have not played the London Royal Festival Hall neither as part of a tour nor on a charity concert.
"Three Times A Lady" was only performed during the 1978 tour.
Cliff might have played the Royal Festival Hall, I have no details about his concerts, but certainly not with the Shadows.

I am sorry that I cannot be of more help to solve your confusion.

I'm almost certain I saw the Shads at the RFH in what was probably a charity gig. An odd list of artists including Joss Ackland (I think) and a (very loud) Traffic. I recall 'Nivram' but nothing else. I have no idea when it was!

Yes/no?

Yes, but that was 1967:
Charity Concert in Aid Of The International Film Fund
Programm (a.o.): Cliff Richard & The Shadows, Georgie Fame, Traffic, Cy Grant, John Williams, Johnnie Scott Quintett, Joe Harriott's Indo-Jazz Fusion, George Melly (compere)
Mo 20.11.1967 London (Royal Festival Hall)

John / Johnny Scott was a well-known composer, arranger, bandleader, alto-saxophonist and flautist. On alto sax, he sounded like a close copy of Brubeck's saxophonist, Paul Desmond. He wrote a lot of well known library music including the themes for the BBC programme "Nationwide" (title: The Good Word) and the BBC soap opera "The Newcomers" (Fancy Dance, recorded by John Barry, using Scott on alto).

I saw the Joe Harriott / John Mayer Indo-Jazz Fusions at Liverpool University in 1969. Sitar and tabla was all the rage in the jazz world that year!

The Shadows indeed only performed "Three Times A Lady" as a vocal during their Autumn 1978 tour (with Alan Jones on bass guitar), but as an instrumental version (the same arrangement as on the "Moonlight Shadows" album) during their Spring 1986 UK tour and their Spring 1987 Australasian tour (these last two with Mark Griffiths on bass guitar, as Alan Jones was unavailable because of the musical "Time").

Regarding the 1967 RFH charity concert my Wife and I are beginning to remember more thanks to Ulrich's artist list. But we both seem to recall Joss Ackland reading a piece or prose/poetry and have no recollection of George Melly at all. We wanted Traffic to do 'Hole in my Shoe' - but no.
