I believe the Ventures’ popularity in Japan was not replicated elsewhere, Ivo. I think that their popularity waned after 1963 elsewhere in the world. They enjoyed decades of loyal following in Japan, touring every year and spending months in the country, playing even in smaller towns I am told. They recorded pieces targeted at the Japanese market, employing melodic patterns common in Japanese music.

The Ventures had a successful concert here a little over ten years ago, but, if not for Japan, I believe the Ventures would have faded from view by the late 60s. I do not think they would have been able to match the success of the Shadows’ Final Tour. But in 1967, the Ventures would have easily trumped the Shadows in Japan.

I am sure Ventures fans will disagree with me here.

I do like the Ventures, but, as I do with the Shadows, prefer their pre-1964 tracks.

The Shadows toured Japan in 1967 for the first time. In late 1969 they toured the country again, this time together with Cliff. Then in 1972 Hank, Brian, John Farrar and Alan Hawkshaw again went to Japan together with Cliff, as part of the Brian Bennett Band, with Marvin & Farrar (backed by Alan Tarney and Trevor Spencer) also performing their own set. In 1974, Bruce went on tour there again with Cliff. But after that, did The Shadows ever return to Japan for another tour?

Thank you Cees. I had heard of this concert, but didn't know the complete venue details. I see the venue is listed with all the clips.

- The group's set recorded in Copenhagen in Denmark in August, 1961;
- The group's set recorded in Blokker or Scheveningen in The Netherlands on the 6th and/or 7th of May, 1964;
- The group's set recorded at the Forum in Luik or Liege, Belgium on the 8th of May, 1964;
- The group's set recorded at the Eurohal in Valkenburg in the south of The Netherlands on the 18th of September, 1965;
- The aforementioned set of numbers from the Japanese TV special on the 18th of June, 1967;
- The aforementioned set of numbers from Tokyo in June, 1967;
- The Shadows' complete concert from Coventry on the 17th of May, 1977;
- The group's set recorded at the London Palladium on the 3rd and 4th of March, 1978;
- The Shadows' complete concert from De Doelen Theatre in Rotterdam, The Netherlands on the 2nd of April, 1980;
- The Shadows' complete concert from Hong Kong, China in early/mid March, 1984;
- The group's set recorded at Wembley Stadium on the 16th and/or 17th of June, 1989.

I see I posted this more than ten years ago. Interestingly, Dusty Tapes Records has made available the first five recordings: Copenhagen 1961, Blokker 1964, Liege 1964, Valkenburg 1965 and Japanese TV 1967.

Just for clarity, the set I recently heard - in good quality and in stereo - ran as follows:

1. Don't Make My Baby Blue
2. Let It Be Me
3. Apache
4. Nivram
5. In The Mood
6. Bombay Duck
7. Mary Anne
8. A Little Bitty Tear
9. The Green Green Grass Of Home
10. Foot Tapper
11. Shadoogie
12. Spring Is Nearly Here
13. The Rise And Fall of Flingel Bunt
14. Somewhere
15. Little B
16. FBI

Shadoogie definitely included, but no sign of Dance On! or Shazam!.

Hello Jim,
That is the same track listing as the CD I have. Love to know how many of them exist in the wild.
Cheers from NZ,
JB

I have merged the two threads, Rob’s original and Jim’s recent, because it has become clear they are about the same thing.
