Shadows photo sessions

Postby Keith Bateman » 29 Jul 2010, 19:00

Prompted by a post in another thread concerning Jet and Liquorice (which I can’t now find!) where a photo session was mentioned, I offer my thoughts about different sleeve and cover shots which came from the same session.

Wonderful Land of The Shadows and Dance On With The Shadows EPs and the Meet The Shadows booklet. WLOTS and the booklet both have the lads in the same clothes and DOWTS has them in suits. The instruments appear the same. I believe this Edgar Brind session was the one mentioned in the other thread and also involved a music book. I then studied closely the Out of The Shadows LP and believe this picture also to be from that session. Brian has the same shirt but no jumper, Bruce is dressed the same, Liquorice has an orange shirt (the only marked difference) and Hank seems to have his suit shirt on minus the tie. Edgar Brind is credited with this photo as well.

The Shadows to The Fore EP and The Shadows By Themselves book cover are slightly different poses from the same session.

I also wonder if the Angus McBean session which produced the cover shot for The Shadows EP also provided the shot for the Me and My Shadows LP. It is well known that Cliff is masked out on the EP cover but is wearing a suit whereas on the LP he is in casual gear. However The Shads are wearing their red suits in both.

Can anyone (Jim N?) confirm these theories and does anyone have more examples?

I can confirm that the Angus McBean photos used for the front covers of the EP "The Shadows" (SEG 8061) and the "Me And My Shadows" LP (33SX 1261) are from the same studio and approximate time, if not from the same shoot. But I would think they are from the same shoot, especially considering the Shads' uniforms and the lighting effects.

I got recently about 20 press release photos of Cliff (sorry!), but there was a couple of Shadows ones there.

One was a EMI one, I guess 70s, of Bruce, Brian and Hank.

The interesting thing about this picture (or really sad!), is that it must have been used in some newspaper as a "glasses" story.

As someone had drawn a box around Hanks glasses, and there is a sticker on the back, saying what the story was, what the paper was, (It says "BM", was there a Birmingham Mail?) page, day, size and how many cm it took up.

The other picture I have never seen before, but no doupt you guys have.

It is Brian, Hank and Bruce again, 70s, no EMI on it, in a Saab (I think) car, with a church in the background, Bruce in the driving seat, Hank getting in the passanger seat and Brian leaning on the roof.

Sorry this is a bit off topic to the question.

There is a search facility on this site - it's not visible on every screen so you have to hunt a bit - but it's really powerful. Put in the right key word and you're away

Hi Keith

I think the thread you're referring to is "The Sixties Didn't Start Until 1962" and it was me who made the comments about the photos of Jet and Licorice.

Cheers.

Thanks chaps and Jim for the information confirming my suspicions.

It's a shame there aren't more examples from the Shadows to the Fore session and also from the one providing the pic for the front of The Early Years box set which are great shots of the original line up.

In a library book I saw recently, there were some old Shads photos, one being a cover shot from one of the old girls fan magazines of the time - a colour shot of Cliff and the Shads onstage in Babes in the Wood, from about mid 1960...

They were in costume, Hank with the original Strat, Bruce with the black Vega, and Jet with a WHITE Framus bass...and they were all wearing FIESTA RED TIGHTS WITH MATCHING PIXIE BOOTS!

This is what I think you're referring to...
