Real Ale and Guitar Playing

Postby almano » 20 Aug 2010, 18:56

Here’s an odd question to get you going – what makes your guitar work sound better – real ale or lager or nothing at all?

For us “old timers” I reckon a good pint or two of something like ‘Fullers London Pride’ (for us Londoners) and a Batemans or Theakstons for those nearer the Yorkshire regions, certainly gets us sounding more like Hank with every glug we swallow (well it does for me!)

Does real ale actually lubricate your fingers and make them more “flexible” – I reckon it does – or, does it just seem to, somehow?!

Now – can lager produce those same results? And – just what is it those “stars” slurp when they dodge behind their amp stacks these days? I bet it isn’t the pints we used to wallop back in the sixties and seventies! Ah, the old memories!

How ever did we keep our balance on stage in those days?

Now, will a Theakstons Old Peculier improve my Dorian mode playing – I bet it will!

Cheers!

Alan.

5 pints of Coors definitely makes me play like Bert Weedon on Tuesdays.

The real Ale lives in Forte dei Marmi (Lucca), Toscana, Italia.

Being down here in sunny Sussex, the only thing that makes me think I sound like Hank is Harvey's Sussex Bitter. During the winter months, their Old Ale makes me think I sound even more like Hank. During December and January, and after imbibing some of their Christmas Ale, I don't care what I sound like.

I prefer a nice ice cold bottle of Miller, a couple of bottles of that and i feel like i'm playing as good as Hank, but i'm probably not.
I don't drink beer too much though, i have to watch the waistline!
