THE OTHER SIDE OF PHIL KELLY

Last night (Sat 2nd Oct) the three of us Lesley Bartholomew, Ken Bowler and myself set off to the deepest depths of Somerset to see Phil Kelly perform in his own back yard, Phil was appearing at his local pub in Ilchester, the drive down was a miserable one with heavy rain and wind, making the journey that much longer, I thinks we were all thinking wow this is a long way to go to watch someone play the guitar !!.......Well I have never been more pleased with a evening than this one, Phil was so pleased to see us all and thanked us for making the journey…………………8.30pm came and Phil started his gig. Oh my god we could not believe his sound and his playing, we all new from watching him at Shadowmaina over the last few years that he was good, but to see and hear him in his own right is a pleasure beyond belief, Phil can play in any style you care to mention and he does it all with such ease, he just oozes talent, we were treated to the sounds of The Shadows~~Gary Moore~~B B King~~Eric Clapton~~Stevie Ray Vaughn~~Jimi Hendrix ~~Carlos Santana, his singing matched his fantastic playing along with his dry banter giving every body present the good feel factor. The evening flew by and it was time to leave for our journey back home……..As we left Phil said I dedicate this tune to you for your trip home, and we left to the sound of Wonderful Land coming out into the pub car park, What a wonderful night had by us all, Phil is a proper gentleman making sure we had a great night and made us feel so much a part of it……….Thank you Phil……..We will be back……….

Is it Ilchester or Ilminster which has the famous by-pass on which I was clocked for doing over 60mph on our way to Croyde Bay a few years back?

Did you happen to notice if anyone was running a recording in the audience?

 Completely slipped my mind that Phil had a gig last night. I was meaning to go out, although, as you say, the weather was terrible.

Uncleboko: I've only ever been caught speeding once, and that was also on the Ilminster bypass.

s4wgb: Justin had his own gig at the Yeovil Ex-Servicemen's club last night. We do, sometimes get treated to either Justing joining Phil, or vice-versa, at local pub gigs.

Well, what can I add to that apart from saying that I am still "Buzzin'" (& my ears are still ringing :) )from last night's 'visit', & to convey my greatful thanks again to Derek & Ken for taking me along with them to see Phil. From the moment I stepped in the pub & caught sight of Phil to the moment of our departure I could not stop beaming from ear to ear. :D :D :D
It has been far too long since I last saw Phil do a live gig, (apart from Shadowmania) due to various circumstances, so I knew I was in for a real treat last night even before we got there. He certainly lived up to his richly deserved reputation as his playing & sound was phenomenal, & when he did some Gary Moore numbers it was awesome to watch & listen.
Like you, Stuart, I have known Phil & Pauline for many years, so, naturally I am a tad biased as they are very dear friends of mine, so it was a double bonus for me to meet up with them again.
If my memory serves me correctly, I think it was you, Stuart who put Ade in touch with Phil all those years ago, so my belated thanks go to you for starting the friendship that meant so very much to Ade, & is continueing to this day for me.
I do hope there will be a 'next time' for me again fella's, cos as you know I enjoyed the evening immensely, so if you take another journey down to deepest Somerset, then count me in....... :D

Hi derek,
Thankyou for your kind words with ref to the gig on saturday,it was great to see all of you and i really appreciate the miles you travelled in as you mention what can only be descibed as horrible weather conditions, it made the evening special for me to play to you all away from the big stage and in a more intimate setting and seeing Lesley was really the icing on the cake for me, we go back such a long time and i owe so much to both her and dear Adrian.
I hope to come down to your club in the near future and maybe play a little perhaps, it would be fun,
much thanks again,
Phil.

Hi Les,
a big thankyou from me to you for coming to see me play, it was so great to see you.
I hope i played some favourites for both yourself and dear Ade, and maybe brought back a few memories, i know it did for me.
Hopefully we can meet up again soon, and this time we will be able to have more of a good chat.
Till then much thanks , keep well and lots of love,
Phil.
