Burns Track Listing Wanted - Please

Hi All

I bought Tony Hoffmans Burns book off ebay, and in it he states that Flingel Bunt was the first Shads recording
to use the Burns guitar.

I think I am right in saying that Shadow Music also used the Burns.

My question is,would it be possible for someone to list which albums/tracks were
definately recorded with the Burns, and also say which backing tracks are available for them.

I know it's a big ask but,I am getting a Burns Custom next week, hence the reason for the question.

Many thanks

Alan

In my opinion, just play anything and everything on the Burns - in my case that includes Santana.
Enjoy! :geek:

I think it would be safe to assume that all recordings of The Shadows from 1964 to 1969 were recorded using burns guitars. On the album Dance with The Shadows, three tracks, Blue Shadows,Dakota, and French Dressing, were recorded in Blackpool in August 1963 probably using Fender guitars. The use of burns guitars prior to 1964 on recordings must be pure speculation.

What about all the prototype Burns models made before the final versions appeared in 1964? Maybe they used some of them to record with?

Incidentally, wonder what happened to those?

I can recall Hank saying in his Beat Instrumental column, that the reason it took so long to develop the guitar and why Jim Burns had to make so many prototypes, was because even when he made one that Hank liked, Bruce found something he didn't like, so back it went..

Wasn't Atlantis in 1963 recorded on one of those prototypes?

It is fair to surmise that Hank would be taking one or more of the prototype Marvins along to recording sessions, but there is no clear evidence that a Burns was used on tracks before FB. The consensus is that FB was the first release which can be definitely attributed to the Burns.

Agreed.

There is much talk of when and where prototype Burns guitars were used. There is a photo of John Rostill at one of the last Shads recording sessions Licorice did (his hand can be seen fretting a P-bass) and Hank is sporting a Burns prototype in the shot. So he may have played it on Theme for Young Lovers and Walkin'. But the photo is not of the actual studio performance so we cannot be 100% certain.

I've just got a copy of 'The Cliff Richard Show-Live at the ABC Kingston 1962'. Inside the sleeve is a small booklet and three seperate 'photos'. One of the photos is a stage shot from the rear and it shows Cliff on the right and a rear view of HBM. HBM is playing a Burns guitar- I can tell from the scroll top headstock. I'm wondering whether this is an authentic photo from the show or as often happens shot at a much later date. The date of the recording is 7th March 62.

I suppose there was a period sometime during 1962-63 when Hank and Bruce were trying out the prototypes..but whether they risked using them on stage or in the studio...???? I bet they don't remember either!

There was once a quite amusing radio interview with Hank (I think!- I last heard a taped copy of this in the late '60's) and whilst talking about them getting the new Burns to replace their Fenders which had tuning issues, they also included a short recorded comment from Jim Burns himself- who joked in his Geordie accent that Hank and Bruce had locked him up in his workshop, and pushed his tea under the door, telling him that they were not letting him out until he got the guitars to their liking!

The photo from included in the Kingston show is from the Rostill years; Kingston - with Jet in the lineup - would be the red Fenders, as the white Fenders (which preceding the Burns) did not come in until Licorice was in the band.
