Shads - London Palladium: Sat 15 Jan 1800 BBC2

Postby Iain Purdon » 13 Jan 2011, 04:09

If you missed it on New Year's Eve, BBC2 is repeating 100 Years of the London Palladium on Saturday 15th January at 6 pm.

As well as being great TV for those of us of a certain age, Cliff takes a significant part in the programme and there's a clip of him and the Shads from one of the ATV Sunday Night.... shows.

The programme is not on BBC iPlayer so this is one for the videos.

Yes, I saw this Iain. In fact it was a clip with them playing Burns guitars.

It's interesting to see these old clips. By this one, BB looks like an old hand, very comfortable to be on TV. JR still looks a bit overawed IMHO.

You can tell JR is not comfortable as he was standing behind BB.

The performance in question was a late 1965 SNATLP appearance by Cliff Richard And The Shadows, with The Shadows first playing (and premiering) The Warlord and then backing Cliff Richard in a medley of hits: The Young Ones / Lucky Lips / Living Doll / Bachelor Boy as well as another song.

The Lucky Lips part of the medley was released on the VHS video "The Hit List", some years ago. It is short (much shorter than the single) precisely because it was part of a medley and not a free-standing performance.

John Rostill had been with Cliff and The Shadows for two years by then. He'd made two films with them and had toured the world, as well as recording (and writing) dozens of tracks. I'm sure he was not uncomfortable with performance. Stage placement will have been a matter for the group and the programme's director.

This was already a repeat Trayc so I'd be surprised if it turned up again soon. However, it's too good a programme not to run again , perhaps on BBC3 or 4, so best to keep an eye on the listings and hope.

To all John Rostill fans, I'd be the first to say that he was completely at home in the Shadows musically and it's known that he was thought by the others to be their best bassist yet. I just felt that stage "presence" wasn't really his thing, even then.

As soon as the Shadows finished their set on a SNATLP (not the one which started this thread) my friend and I cycled the six miles or so to the Palladium and waited at the stage door to see them. After a long time, Bruce (Forsyth, not Welch!) appeared and informed us that the Shadows had left ages ago. We were very disappointed, and it would be another 45 years or more before I finally got to meet Bruce (Welch, not Forsyth!) when he turned up unannounced at the Surrey Shadows Club.
