Mail infected-address book hi-jacked

Hi each, for those who have known me for some years I have re-joined today to explain the hi-jacking of my Hotmail address book contacts. You've been recieving the usual sex aids and Viagra junk in droves. In order to stop the stream, I've deleted the Hotmail account causing the problem with all your addresses in it going back 10 years. Hopefully this will have stopped the intrusion.

It all happened 2 weeks ago when Pete Korving mailed my Hotmail unnfortunatley the warning message was in Dutch. So knowing Pete as a trustede contact, I opened the mail and it was bugged--even had Bruce Welch's addy stream. So appolagise to all who've had junk stuff from Hotmail.

Regards

Brian

I did get a mail Brian, but ditched it as it didn't look like your usual stuff, so no harm done here.

I had exactly the same thing last year. I, eventually, contacted Hotmail and was advised to just change my password. No problems since then.

I confirm, but there is nothing that Brian can do now, he is not the one who send the spams. Someone uses his mail list which has been hijacked.

Hi All

My mate Ray Gallo who is a pro player / teacher had his hotmail hijacked and I got an email from his account saying that he was stuck in Spain and had lost his wallet. It asked if I could send him 1200 euro's until he got back. I called Ray and he was at home in north London. Say no more.

I'm most embarrased about this Jock. It tlooks as though I've closed the stable gate after the horse has bolted. Those addresses are now known to the cretin who spammed Pete's address book.

As I mentioned, I deleted the account but it's now too late. Anyone got any ideas,--blocking--white list etc or is it a case of broken for ever?

I am truly sorry for my stupidity, If only I could read Dutch I wouldn't have opened Pete's trusted e-mail. However, he did put an exclamation mark in the subject text which should have warned me.

Regrets

Brian

Hotmail seems to have been hijacked since the day it first started up.

Sometimes you receive loads of spam from Hotmail accounts and then it stops when Hotmail gets it's act together and plugs the hole.

I know that some people use multiple email accounts so that they can use a specific email address for a specific reason, e.g. guitarman@email.com for contacts on this website or formalname@email.com for business use etc. but there tends to be a price to pay when using these "free" email addresses. The main price seems to be the lack of security with Hotmail. Remember, it's not just spam for viagra that is sent, there are also viruses, phishing messages and the sob-story begging letters.

Most ISPs will allow you to create multiple email addresses which you can log on to from any PC at the ISP's website so there is not the same requirement for providers such as Hotmail as there once was.

I'm afraid that the only way to stop this happening is to stop using Hotmail and to refuse to accept ANY emails from a Hotmail address.

Remember, it's not just your own pc that you need to protect, it's the pc of everyone in your address book too.

Sure thing, that's why I re-joined this site purely to point out to the older memebrs in my addy book who've been here years the problem I've landed them in. This has been repeated throughout many continents and I've written the same explanation. It's a pyramid thing, I can't even open my Acid Plant account due to the Hotmail cancelation. If those who wish PM me for a new contact addy I'll send my Tiscali one.

Anyhow I've done the honourable thing and let those affected know the reason. I can't now say any other than to leave the problem alone and to say sorry.
