Just found this picture of Tony on drums with the Shadows. I never knew he played with them, even on a single occasion, during the Burns period!! I wonder what song this was. Perhaps Apache?

I believe that Tony was briefly called back to replace Brian Bennett while he was hospitalised.

That photo was published in Shadsfax issue 23 (May/June 1999).

According to the write up, supplied by Trevor Popple, The Shadows are miming to "Naughty Nippon Nights" on ATV's "Showtime" in January 1968.

The show was recorded shortly after the Talk of the Town cabaret where (according to the account in Mike Read's book) first John Rostill and then Brian Bennett became ill and had to be replaced temporarily with Licorice and Tony respectively. Presumably, John had recovered sufficiently by the time this recording was made but Brian was still ill (with appendicitis).

Another bit of trivia: The "Burns" name has been covered by tape on each of the guitars.

This is Hank's in close up:

Tony also played with them on 'Apache' and 'Bachelor boy' on New Year's Eve 1969 - the clip turns up on BBC3 quite a lot.

Why was the Burns name covered?

Presumably the Baldwin take-over had just occurred & there wasn't time to change the scratchplates.

I'm pretty sure it was to do with advertising, although I can't quite remember the reason.

Well, Baldwin took over Burns in 1965, so I doubt it was that. Alan maybe right, it may have been to do with the BBC's rules on advertising. I vaguely recall a tv sitcom where a packet of cereal had been altered. We would nmever have guessed what 'Kettogg's Oorn Flakes' really was...
