I see that Lewis Hamilton has paid $100,000 (£61k) for Prince's 'famous' (?) gold strat at a charity auction.

I didn't even know he could play.

I think it's subjective as to how much one would be willing to pay for any celebrity owned instrument, whatever the colour. If I could afford one and if they were ever for sale, I would be happy to pay whatever the cost to own Eddie Cochran's Gretsch, Buddy Holly's Strat or Lennon's Rickenbacker and similar instruments that have history - however I wouldn't give a toss about Prince's instruments as I don't reckon anything to him, like I said it's subjective. :)

If not in a position to buy a celebrity owned guitar, there`s another interesting way to go. In the early days, mid-60`s, before the term "Vintage" was introduced as such to indicate a used guitar, I had a dream. My aim was set to own a same year original instrument similar to what my guitar hero played on. In time, not only did I succceded to get what I wanted, but also as a extra bonus got guitars with close related serial numbers. My 1959 Gibson Les Paul is only seven numbers apart from Peter Greens famed 1959 LP, and my Fender 1956 Stratocaster only fortythree numbers apart from Eric Clapton`s 1956 Brownie. Both of these have their original cases, the LP even still have the original hangtags. Those were the days..

Anyone out there with a 1959 Strat serial close to Hanks?

Cheers Pol.

I've 'followed' Formula 1 for as long as I've been interested in guitars, some 40+ years. Saw an interview with Hamilton some time back and he listed playing guitar as his main way of relaxation and there was some footage of him with a sunburst Les Paul.

Must admit, I'm no fan of the particular 'bling' image that he's brought to the sport. The diamond encrusted helmet, earring and of course, the PussyCat Doll girlfriend. An all- gold, ex-Prince guitar, just fits in with what apparently passes for 'style' with Mr. Hamilton. Also goes to show, that like footballers, the money paid to F1 drivers is just ridiculous these days and they must be pushed to know what to throw cash at next.................

With regard to Prince, I'm no great fan of his output, but I can't detract from either his musicianship,
innovation or prowess as a guitar player. He's a very talented guy, no mistake.

Stephen.

"Anyone out there with a 1959 Strat serial close to Hanks?"

We have one in our midst. Pictures in my gallery on this site.

Hank's was 34346 , 170 between this one and the 'famous one'. It's owned by the son of our rhythm guitarist who bought it from Manny's in NY after Taj Mahal sold it to them.
