The SM57 is essentially the same as that ubiquitous vocal mic the SM58 but without the spherical pop shield. Both have been around since the 1970s and demonstrate the strength of a great design.
The SM57's direct ancestor was Shure's Unidyne III, the main vocal mic of the 1960s and a forerunner in using the XLR as a mic connector in popular music. Back in the 1960s all sorts of connector (mostly unbalanced) were used for mics (in the same way that back then there were all sorts of mains plugs). Now the XLR is the standard mic connector and the 13A plug is universal in the UK - thank goodness for that!

Yes indeed- somehow, I don't think we'll ever see old mics and PA equipment becoming collector's items or makers putting out 'vintage' models like guitars etc!
Whilst there were some classic guitar amps years ago, there aren't any classic PA systems etc....although there were a very few which were a long way ahead of the average- like the German Klempt /Dynachord stuff.
