I have finished reading the book "That Sound!" and have also listened briefly to the accompanying CD, but I don't believe a lot of the early Shadows tracks were recorded with a Gretsch. I am with Bruce, who says, "You are wrong, I was there". Hank himself has said he only used the Gretsch on "Nivram" and Cliff's "A Girl Like You". Despite the risk of getting into another long-winded discussion about the 'Gretsch controversy', I just had to say something about it.

I suspect iefje's response has little to do with your Youtube "Apache" posting. Unlike (I suspect) him, I HAVE watched - and enjoyed - the video. The only thing I wasn't keen on was the use of a bl**dy backing track - but that's perhaps because I'm "just a Drummer"!!
I have to admit to a liking for "interpretations" of our beloved Shadows numbers, so long as no-one tries to claim them as examples of "That Sound". The same Youtube section has examples of "Apache" played by various people/bands, including a nice one by The Ventures, and I didn't "dislike" any of them!
I recall - a long time ago - buying the LP "Shadows in Latin" by Norrie Parramor, and really enjoyed it! Unfortunately, it "went" some time ago, either in a house move or general clear-out, and regrettably has never been replaced.
Thanks for posting the Gretsch "Apache"!

"Shadows In Latin" was re-released, as you probably know, on a CD. That CD is now deleted.

But...

It's available on Spotify, under Norrie Paramor, as half of the album: "Plays The Hits Of Cliff Richard/Shadows".

You can listen for free. I assume you would not be so dastardly as to record ad digital copy of it via an analogue connection...

There is a way to record the sound digitally from the website, just using your computer. I can set my Creative Sound Recorder application to receive sounds 'as one hears it'. Bear in mind though, you should not make another application produce sounds, as those will be recorded as well!

It is difficult to interpret such an iconic piece, but his version is enjoyable. I like it better than the Ventures' version, in fact.
Roberto Pistolesi's book is quite enjoyable, too, and, while I believe Hank pretty much always used a Strat, Pistolesi's fascination and dedication to his quest for "the sound" is heart-warming and contagious. I would have liked him if I had met him, I think.
