I've been involved in an upcoming project and recording the audio using Adobe Audition for the audio and Sony Vegas for the video.
I learnt to my chagrin that the filename extension is the same, namely; ses
The Sony Vegas extension used to be veg
Having finished the audio I then started the video and saved the first draft with the same name as the audio.
Mistake.
It replaced the audio file with the video file thus wasting all my efforts in doing the soundfile.

Grrrr and grrr and grrr.

I got to do it all over again.

Grrrr and grrr and grrr.

I've had similar experiences, though not with video and audio files. Luckily, as I use a Mac, I was able to use the Time Machine function which, using a large capacity external hard drive, literally allows you to go back to the state of your computer at any given time over a long period and recover files that have been erased since then. At the moment I can recover files erased as long ago as August 15 2010. Time Machine automatically records the state of the whole computer every hour, though when you go a long way back, the time intervals saved are weekly.
