I'm sure that most members here will know about Duane's new CD and recent activity. Arthur Moir sent me this link to a 'mini - gig' that Duane + Richard Hawley & co. did in EMI's offices recently. If you're a Duane fan - you'll love this - it's fantastic.

Magic!! Sounds the same as the first time I heard him.

One of the first instrumentals I learned was Duane's Shazam on a Rossetti 'Solid 7' in 1961!... followed quickly by Apache. If it wasn't for the likes of all these fabulous musicians I wouldn't be playing stuff like Steve Ray Vaughan's 'Rivierra Paradise' now. I would probably have turned that Rossetti 'plank' into a cricket bat!

Yes Dave, he's one of those guitarists who has a certain unique gifted touch that only comes along maybe once in a decade.

For me Hank was the first, then Pete Haycock (Climax Blues), Clapton and Tommy Emmanuel, but over the last few years Satriani, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Beck really grab my attention! All unique in their own way of playing - and that's the way to go. You never stop learning.

I'm afraid I'm pretty un-impressed with the modern Duane Its just not anywhere near the talent of the likes of Hanks old or new music. Its not exactly taxing on the brain or indeed fingers what he's doing is it? I know he helped us all on in our early years of playing when we were all starting out and found his music interesting in that era, but all you guys in here that post examples of your own playing sound much much better than that. And I would'nt mention his name in the same sentence as JB, WT or SRV Now 'they' were guitar greats
Sorry to all you dedicated fans in here but its just my own opinion of the man
I just dont see any spark there, when Les Paul did that last concert, he still had the magic when he was ninety arthritic fingers and all
I just dont think he's moved any further forewards in all these years of playing, quite the opposite in fact.
And please....dont start a war over this comment, everybody's got an opinion

Well I have to confess I have'nt seen this Duane's playing. All I've ever heard of seen him play is the stuff he did in the sixties that we all heard on his records of that era. Which brings me back to 'why did'nt he do more of this playing rather than just going over the same old ground that he has done over the years'? well the stuff I've seen anyway.
Maybe I've just moved on to other things over the years and lost my interest in the early music
If you study Hanks career by comparison, he has changed his style of playing and his sound quite a lot over the years and kept up the interest in us all by doing so. Thats my take on it anyway. Thinking back, I never really looked at him as someone I wanted to learn from or indeed play his tunes, he had a 'sound' that was different to other musicians due to his lower tuning but he did'nt command anywhere near the same interest for me that the Shads and other bands of the time did.
Like I said, we all have our interests and our opinions in this life which is music and I have no intention of offending anyone in here.
Some folks up here think that 'Sydney Devine'(Steak and Kidney) is a great musician and entertainer
