The undubbed Marvin/Welch/Bennett/Locking version of Guitar Tango appears on the CD "The Shadows At Abbey Road - The Collector's Edition" (EMI 8 23042 2; UK 1997).

Except, Jet Harris isn't on this recording, it's actually Brian Locking on bass guitar.
The basic recording, as discussed here, was done at Abbey Road Studios on the 23rd of May 1962, over a month after Jet Harris left The Shadows. Norrie Paramor's orchestral overdub was recorded on the 18th of June 1962, added and issued in July 1962 as "Guitar Tango" b/w "What A Lovely Tune".

Lefje is quite right. It is Licorice on the undubbed "Guitar Tango". There are 3 unissued versions featuring Jet in the EMI vaults. Each one shows a 'work in progress' and it's fascinating to hear the track developing. The 'best' of those 3 was due to be included on the "Shadows At Abbey Road" rarities set in 1997. It was withdrawn at Bruce's insistence, because even the 'best' of those 3 'Jet' versions was still only a working demo - still with 'rough edges'. As a compromise Bruce was happy for the completed track (minus strings) with Licorice to be included instead. If I remember correctly there was also a little stereo re - mixing involved.

Jet left the Shadows immediately following the NME Poll Winners concert on Saturday April 15th 1962. His last major session with Cliff / Shads was on April 12th (although the book detailing Cliff's sessions notes that Jet returned for a one - off session on May 1st for "Take Special Care" - presumably because Licorice was unavailable - but the results were unissued). I would suspect, therefore, that the embryonic "Guitar Tango" takes were recorded sometime during early April 1962.

Slightly off-topic, but the version of "Take Special Care" you mention, isn't that the faster version as issued on the June 1997 4 CD box "The Rock 'N' Roll Years 1958-1963", different to the slower 'relaxed' and overdubbed version on the 1965 LP "Cliff Richard"?

Doubtless you are correct Lefje. I should have said was unissued at the time.
