Keyboard Help

Postby neil2726 » 23 Aug 2011, 20:11

My son has just taken up playing keyboards and is looking to buy a keyboard that can be amplified thro an amp or PA. He doesnt want anything too expensive at this stage. He has e mailed one major retailer but after 10 days has not has
any response! Any advice would be appreciated.

I got rid of my mega expensive Roland Fantom 8 as it was above my needs and quite complicated.
I then bought the new Yamaha Piaggero for just over three hundred quid - it's terrific and has a lot of good sampled sounds on board as well as one finger chords and automatic backing if you need it, but can be played as a normal keyboard with all the sounds you'd ever need.
We use it in the studio and at the theatre gigs, Best thing I ever bought in this line - recommended.

Thanks Dave but at this stage he is looking for something in a lower price bracket. He doesnt gig at the moment but he has learned the keyboards to Atlantis and Wonderful land as well as a few vocal numbers which require string backing effect. Something pretty basic and simple to use would be fine, as it will have limited use at the moment. Gear4music had some going for under £100 but the spec doesnt say they can put thro an external amp. He did e mail them 10 days ago and hasnt had any response - so he is looking elsewhere!

OK Neil i understand. If there is a headphone socket then it's possible to connect from that to an amplifier - that is how the Piaggero is connected.
If you tell me the keyboards you're looking at, I'll try and confirm for you.

If You Are looking For something With good String / brass / orch etc etc sounds
and dont want all the latest sequencers and auto play etc.
a excellent starter would be a secondhand korg x5 or x5D the only difference is the x5 has 32 note poly the x5d has 64
these are great for learning parts etc as you can split the keyboard for different sounds etc
these are small and light weight and have left & right jack plug outputs for plugging into any amp/mixer etc
This keyboard does not have a inbuilt amp or speakers so needs to be connected to a amp / speaker .
you should be able to find one on ebay etc at a reasonable price as they are now considered out of date

Regards

Dave

He is looking at the Yamaha YPT -220 keyboard which has 61 keys and retails at around £87.00 which does have a headphone socket.

OK, that should work fine through an external amp from the headphone socket. Just double check with the shop.

Just to confirm that a Yamaha YPT-220 has been ordered. The dealer confirms that the headphone socket can be connected to an amp as you suggested Dave!
