Came across this article about Cliff Gallup who you may remember playing for Gene Vincent.
This is what Hank & Bruce were listening to (amongst others of course) in the early years.
Of special interest is the echo machine used & the authors thoughts & techniques for getting "that sound" by using modern guitars & pups etc...
Could this indeed be part of the beginnings of "that sound"

The echoplex machine, similar to the one used by Cliff Gallup is bein reissued :
http://www.fulltone.com/tte.aspBut it's a single echo system, very diferent from the Meazzi multi-echo units that Hank used in the early days.
Not sure that Hank knew anything about these early echo units used in the USA...

Strictly my opinion, but I have always heard a lot of Cliff Gallup's sound and style in Hank's playing, and also James Burton's style too- no secret as Hank acknowledged these guys as early influences.
Some of Cliff's solos in the Gene Vincent ballads (Up a Lazy River, That old gang of Mine, Jezebel) would sound familiar in feel to Hank fans, just as Hank's solo in Gee Whiz it's you reminds me of James Burton's solo on Ricky Nelson's Believe What You Say- indeed I have heard of Cliff and the Shads being described as essentially an English version of Rick Nelson and his backing group's sound..
