O/T Nick Lowe
Now I am sure just about every guitar playing member of this forum will state the reason they took up the guitar was because of Hank. Well for me it was actually Nick Lowe. See http://nicklowe.com/index.php?format=ht ... le_id=7483
I was very fortunate that I went to the same boarding school as Nick and was in the same year as him. In fact I was in the same boarding house and sat next to him in the prep room for a couple of terms. After about two weeks at the school I was walking past the school hall and heard the live sound of a Shads tune coming from within. I openned the doors and saw Nick playing in what I soon found was the "School Group". To that point it never ocurred to me that I could do that but seeing a fellow pupil creating the sounds I loved was the real inspiration to give it a go. I should point out that other members of that school group included Brinsley Schwarz and Barry Landemann. Brinsley became one of the cult figures of the 70s in the pub-rock scene whereas Barry joined the band which had a number 1 hit with "Hitchin' a Ride" and played keyboard and the recorder solo on that record - look it up on YouTube. The first time I ever played in a group on stage was at an end of term show when we played three numbers and I am proud to say my bass player and lead singer was Nick Lowe.
It is great to see he is doing so well and have just bought tickets for his tour next year. This will be the first time I will have seen him since he left school in '66.
