Close shave with a Meazzi

There was a Meazzi Echomatic on Ebay over the last couple of weeks and as it was local to me I decided I might have a punt on it, as it finished yesterday. I went and had a look at it on Saturday afternoon and though it looked the business, when I tried my guitar through it I was disappointed as none of the echo selection buttons gave a recognisable selection of the Shadows echoes and it was virtually unusable apart from a slapback effect on the HALO button. There was no REGEN control either and there was an uncontrolable feedback on the reverb setting. The internal control didn't work either.
It seems to me that anyone wanting to recreate the Shads echoes with one of these will need to spend a lot of money on modification and refurbishment unless a well preserved model can be unearthed. I'm glad I saw the machine and tried it, but it seems some poor soul paid three hundred quid for a non starter at the end of the bidding.

If asked, Amanda will soon fix that.

Yeah, but the guy said he'd already spent money on getting it restored.

There had been some work done on it but It's academic as I chose not to make an offer.

Thanks for that Dave - now I feel a bit better for missing the bidding and seeing it go for a relatively low price! It seems to have been a dog after all!
Cheers, Lionel

Hi Lionel, it was a six head Meazzi and I assumed that the echo patterns would be something like what we are used to hearing, but I was disappointed not to be able get get any usable pattern other than the rock & roll slapback. No regen conrol either which gave cause for concern - there's one on the Copicat and the ESE.
I don't doubt that it could be modified but I saw ££££s worth of work that I wasn't prepared to throw at it. The other thing of course is, that it included the stereo amp, which needs to be separated from the echomatic bit. If I was going to take the plunge,I decided that I wanted one already working and doing the business.

Hi Dave et al,

The guy I bought my Factotum from had an original echomatic in unmodified condition which he
demonstrated to me while i was there, it was not bad at all, the echo timings were obviously
not correct for Shadows music but it gave a good account of itself.

Obviously the one you saw needed some TLC..
