As far as I know, Bo Winberg (The Spotnicks) first used a Tandberg tape recorder for echoes. Of course it will work only with tape recorder having separate record and playback heads, most budget tape recoders used the same head for record and playback.

When recording the Hammond C3 at Birmingham Ice Rink, we used a Ferrograph fitted with an extra
playback head in the spare head position, for echo.

If we wanted reverb we poked a microphone through the curtains on the stage and picked up the live reverb sound off
the walls and Ice!
