Rolling Stone magazine have just published another meaningless list of the top 100 guitarists of all time. As to be expected, many are American. But most if not all of the British ones listed were hugely influenced by Hank Marvin. Of course, HBM does not feature! Inevitably Hendrix is number one - I wonder if he would have been had he not died so young?

Always interesting these surveys especially the American compared to the British. Is Hank Marvin that well known in America, perhaps he made 101!

As you mention Tim, regarding the early diseased guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix who is absolute legendary, what would he be like today? In comparison take Chuck Berry, who I see is at No.7. I watched a concert on Sky Arts recently, I believe from Switzerland maybe 2 years ago. His playing was cringe worthy, some licks and solos were a semi-tone out and to be frank most of his songs are based around the same guitar intro (although the best intro ever). But, the man is 80+ I believe and still one of the best stage performers/entertainers around. Does he compare to Chet Atkins or Les Paul?

Mind you I've just seen this YouTube clip and what the hell, he should be No.1

As an American fan of The Shadows (and there probably aren't many of us, sadly), I sneered when I saw this article on the internet...and the first thing I looked for was Hank's name. I wanted to believe that since this wasn't a survey of the general public, but rather a vote by supposedly qualified, knowledgeable individuals, maybe Hank's name would be in there somewhere and that my only complaint would be that Hank was not ranked high enough. I mean, it is Top 100; not Top 20, etc.

For example, Mark Knopfler received a lot of votes in this poll, and I'm sure he deserves it. My complaint is that whomever voted for Mark Knopfler should, theoretically, know some things about Mark Knopfler...and we Shads fans all know how highly Mark speaks of Hank Marvin...so how are these voters going to explain to an angry fan like me that they didn't know who Hank was? I guess their answer would be that they know who he is...they just think Lindsey Buckingham ranks higher.

They should have had a vote on the Top 100 American Guitarists of all time...and see if they could even fill up the list with 100 names.

Hank comes across as a very modest man - I'm sure he couldn't care less about such polls!

Why is it that Cliff Richard, The Shadows or their individual members are so often overlooked with these polls and documentaries about the history of modern music? Is it because of their generally modest, honest and friendly behaviour? Are they not cool and/or tough enough?
