I'm wondering if anyone has information about the song Janine. I have the composer listed as "Downes" but I know nothing else about this tune. Tried Googling Janine and Downes but nothing much came up. Are there other versions and are there any lyrics written for it.

Would be grateful for any help.

Thanks

Martin

Can't be certain about this....but it could possibly be keyboard wizard Geoff Downes (Buggles, Asia etc). Someone will know...Jim? George?? Anyone??

I have listed Peter Downes as composer for Janine, but don't know much more about him, possibly he is from the Pete Downes Trio (PD3).

Didn't Malcolm Campbell come to some conclusion on this in one of his books? I certainly remember a lot of correspondence with him on the identity of various Shads tune composers. I particularly remember taking a contrary view on the theory that Danny DeVito had written one of them.

Many thanks Rob, Ulrich and Jim. I'll follow down these paths and see if it leads anywhere. I'm especially wondering if this was written purely as an instrumental or whether there are lyrics for this.

Thanks again

The Pete Downes mentioned by Ulrich seems a possible as he is a jazz and classical player. He is listed here as connected to Hank's 45

but I have no idea how reliable that info is.

Pete Downes website has a 'contact' button. Why not ask him, Martin?

That does seem the most likely George, so thanks for that and I'll do as you say and contact him directly.

Janine was composed by my brother-in-law, Peter Downs for his wife Jean. He sent Hank Marvin a demo tape and Hank copied almost note for note. We have the original demo somewhere and will send it to you if you wish.
When the record was produced they mis-spelled his name as Peter Downes.
Peter was lead guitarist in a band called The Midnights (originally Johnny Starr and the Midnights. The Johnny Starr bit was dropped when Freddy Starr and the Midnighters became famous) back in the 60's.
They performed in and around Luton.

Peter is a natural musician, who can play any instrument you put in front of him, he is a piano tuner, has perfect pitch and has a recording studio in his house in Milton Keynes.

Hi, I received the following from Carrie King to a Youtube posting of mine of Janine...
"'Janine' was written by Peter Downs for his wife, my sister over 20 years ago. Not sure how he would react to the images, which do not portray a love song, at all. An incredibly beautiful work by an amazingly talented composer and musician. 'Janine' is soon to be used as The Title Theme for a Movie, using Peter Downs of course!"
