Lots of Buddy Holly, Joe Meek / RGM sounds, 60s Beat and some Doo Wop + R'n'R. Can't be bad. See you there?? "Peggy Sue" / "Oh Boy" / "Everyday" / "Rave On" / "Sheila" / "Donna" / "I Wonder Why" / "Telstar" / "Tell Laura I Love Her"/ "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" / "Runaway" / "Johnny Remember Me" / "Just Like Eddie" / "Heartbeat" and many, many more!

At the Ace Cafe London on Saturday 4 February 2012 The Triumphs are presenting a Buddy Holly Tribute Show which will use a selection of the material used by the acts who appeared at the Surf Ballroom at Clear Lake Iowa USA on that fateful night of Monday 2nd February 1959. The acts who appeared on that show were Frankie Sardo, Dion and the Belmonts, The Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly and his touring Crickets. Malcolm Lenny a member of Joe Meek's band the Packabeats (remember they played the theme from 'The Traitors' over the opening titles of the feature film 'Telstar') will be performing with The Triumphs. Absolutely nothing to do with the Shadows. But.....they were all HUGE Buddy Holly fans and Bruce Welch rates the Packabeats' "The Traitors" very highly. Maybe see some music fans there? Presumably those who live in fairly close proximity.

Just keeping this near the top - in the hope of building up the audience. Obviously not an instrumental night - apart from "Telstar" - but hopefully some rarely performed numbers amongst the Holly and Joe Meek / RGM 'classics'. Malcolm Lenny's set will be FAB! We are (gulp!) tackling Dion & the Belmonts "Shu Bop" and "I Wonder Why" (lots of 'vocal gymnastics' up in the stratosphere!!!) as well as "Donna", "La Bamba" and lots more! Be great to see any music fans there! The live music starts c. 8.30pm - but the Ace does a very nice line in food and drink etc. The Ace Cafe is highly recommended by none other than Sir Colin of Pryce - Jones amongst others.

Great to know that a few people from ShadowMusic will be there. Come and say hello. We've had our final rehearsal now. The Triumphs will play at least 30 numbers. 18 will be B H or closely - associated B H numbers + a couple of rockers which Buddy included in his live act. Joe Meek was a genuine Buddy Holly devotee and so we'll also be belting out half a dozen or so Meek classics. The remainder of the Triumphs set consists of classic numbers of the 1958 - 1961 era. Plus, commemorating the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens - Malcolm Lenny's set (backed by the Triumphs) re - creates many numbers featured during Buddy's last ever appearance (when he played drums for other acts on the show!!!!). Malcolm will also join us for a rockin' Buddy Holly finale. Admission is FREE and the live music (DJ before that) kicks off at 8.30pm. Anyone else coming?? Should be an enjoyable evening.

I remember going to a Mike Berry & the Outlaws evening of Buddy Holly songs at Dingwalls back in 1986. The Outlaws were Andy Roberts' Tex Maniax and I have a tape of it!

So how did it go Rob?

Unfortunately I couldn't be there as I was involved in a car crash on the morning of the gig.

Our group of four was really upset at missing it. Is there going to be a repeat?

Hi Graham. So sorry to hear that you were involved in a RTC on the day itself. All things considered - we did reasonably well. Unfortunately Malcolm Lenny (who would've been coming from Tonbridge) pulled out at the proverbial 'last minute' & so we had to completely re - arrange the set lists. Attendance was probably hit by the weather & part of the M4 being closed etc meant that most group members didn't get home until 2.00am. But....those who were there seemed to enjoy it. Will we do it again next February?? I don't know!!

Seems we both suffered a bit on the day! My back is even stopping me picking up a guitar, something I had hoped to do while at home getting bored...

It sounds too good an idea to let it wait another year, let's hope you can think of an excuse to repeat it soon.
