Cliff Richard: Behind the music

If you have a branch of The Works nearby, you might want to look for this book+DVD package. Some nice photographs of Sir Cliff and the Shadows from the early days up to the Reunited tour. The DVD is a 1987 documentary by John Tobler which includes some interesting archive footage including the famous youth club performance in front of Princess Margaret, but without the overdub of Apache! Quality is variable but at £2.99 (reduced from £12.99) it's worth a punt.

Did the also have the rather more upmarket slip-cased volume 'Cliff History' reduced from an eye-watering £34.95 to a more wallet-friendly £9.99?

The Cliff history is a beautiful book with some great photographs - again right up to the Reunited tour. Maybe not quite such a strong Shads content, but as with the cheapo book quite a few I haven't seen. The Works in Glasgow had one opened so I had a browse before I decided to buy it. Good value for money if the subject interests you!

Worth having for any Cliff and/or Shadows fan. Big problem would be postage - it's an LP-sized package, though not particularly heavy...

Hi Folks

Picked up a copy of this in my local shopping mall. Great value at £2.99!

The DVD contains a clip of Cliff singing "Power to all our Friends", and in the backing group is none other than John Farrar, playing what looks like a black Les Paul Custom.

Also in the package is a very good booklet, packed with pics of Cliff and the Shadows - a lot of the pics are new to me. three that stand out are:-

(a) a black and white photo from 1961 of Hank with 34356, Jet with his sunburst precision bass, Tony, and Bruce with a Gretch!

(b) a colour shot from 1964 of Cliff on stage with, behind him, John Rostill with a Burns Shadows bass and Hank with a sunburst Burns 12 string.

(c) a black and white shot from 1963/63 of Cliff, Hank, Bruce, Brian and Lic, on a tour bus, with Cliff playing his sunburst Gibson J200.

All in all, well worth it for less than the price of a pint!

As we've discussed many times on this board, Cliff's backing band for Power... is the famous all-Aussie lineup of John Farrar, Alan Tarney, Terry Britten, Trevor Spencer that was put together by producer Dave Mackay (also Australian). Of course Farrar, Tarney and Britten wrote hits for Cliff and for many others. Cliff's manager at the time, Peter Gormley was another Aussie.
