I read on Leo's Den that these Hallmark re-issues seem to be have been taken from the original LP's

I presume that means they are recordings from the LP's so would include surface noise etc

I haven't heard the CD in question, but there'd be no need to take the material from vinyl if it had already been released on CD. It wouldn't even make sense.

Hallmark are themselves an old-established label with a long history of reissues*, starting in the days of LP and continuing up through the digital era. I dare say that they might reissue some out-of-copyright vinyl-only material and be unable to source it from the original master tape...

[* If I recall correctly, there's a connection between Hallmark, Carlton (of TV fame) and Pickwick, meaning that there is a link of sorts between The Shads and Hallmark, via Pickwick.]

The Hallmark Duane Eddy reissues have been reported as taken from vinyl.

There was no need to do it, but they did.

I've been in touch with Jamie who own the Duane Eddy masters and they said Hallmark copy from vinyl because all of the Duane tracks that have been remastered to CD by themselves or by Bear Family are still in copyright.
It's only the original releases that are out of this timescale, hence Hallmark's decision to master from vinyl records.

It's all good fun!!!

I bought the Hallmark reissue of Beyond The Fringe and could tell that it was poorly dubbed from vinyl. In fact, after posting my review on Amazon they now state that it is such. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beyond-The-Fringe-Transfer-Vinyl/dp/B006GP3TWE/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1332407830&sr=8-5

It would appear that just about ALL of Hallmark's releases are taken direct from vinyl, and not top quality vinyl either.

Many (most ?) have distortion, pops, crackles, etc, etc - they sound WORSE than the vinyl in many cases.

I made the mistake of buying one (The Buddy Holly Story Vol 2) but have also read about the poor quality of many others

Read the Amazon reviews, listen to any you can, and AVOID !!!

Must write to Hallmark offering audio-restoration services (I'm pretty good at that).

Could be a handy retirement income.
