A survey...

I was just reading a thread on this site and was surprised to read that one contributor had never previously heard Santa Ana (a track from The Shadows' 1965 LP "The Sound Of The Shadows"). It reminded me of an incident a few years back when my rendition of The Lute Number on an acoustic guitar (and a fairly good version, if I say so myself) was meeting with blank stares from some of the cognoscenti gathered at SMSE (then at The Hastings Arms). It turned out that about half the audience had never heard the Shadows' own version on their 1964 "Rhythm And Greens" EP.

Most of the Shads fans I have associated with and been associated would be familiar with everything the group (and offshoots) have ever issued, from 1958 onward.

So... can we do a survey?

How many members of the community are aware of and/or familiar with the entire recorded catalogue* of The Shadows (as well as their contributions to Cliff's stuff, the films, etc)?

I certainly am not. I know all their hits and a couple of others but no way familiar with entire catalogue! In my defence i would say that the audiences I play to would not know either!!

I hate to sound big headed but I believe I have a good knowledge of the Shads catalogue, but that may be because I am a drummer and am often asked to play this number or that number which may not be that well known.
My now departed friend Stephen Swann (bless him) would say "Do you know......." and if I showed any doubt he would hum or play the first few bars at which point I would respond " Oh that tune"
The biggest problem I have is that I know the tunes but cannot remember what half the titles are.
Oh well maturity comes to us all.

A) I started buying backing tracks. ( Yes, I know that one but not those three ).

B) Joined the merry band of Hankies. ( What was that you just played? Really I'd never heard that one before ).

I am certainly aware of the entire Shadows' recorded catalogue, but not fully familiar with all of their past sixties recordings...

I think I have just about every Shadows CD that has been issued/reissued, all of which I bought through Amazon.co (but from many different countries, though) and Leo's Den. I do not have the select Shadows material that was issued on vinyl only (BBC material, etc.) At least now I finally have a copy of Change of Address.

I have seen some tunes on YouTube that I'd never otherwise heard The Shads perform (concert clips, Cliff TV show clips, etc.). I think in most cases they are performing numbers that they did not officially record/release, but I can't be sure.

If I could add a touch of humour, I would like to say that three oddest Shadows music purchases I have made thus far were:

(1) The particular CD release of "From Hank Bruce, Brian and John" that I bought via Amazon.fr which is the French site of Amazon.co. (no disrespect is intended). The site is entirely in the French language and I can only speak Spanish, other than English. And...I bought this particular CD (very expensive) because it has a lot of bonus tracks, including Kimi To Itsumademo, Omoide No Nagisa, and Gin Iro No Michi - which are Japanese titles. I love the songs but I have no idea what those words mean. And of course, I paid in Euros which we don't use in the US. Shopping Cart = Panier

(2) I bought some Shadows CDs from Amazon.co.jp which is the Japanese website, but it does have a button to click for English language. At the time I made my purchase, the site used only Japanese currency (Yen), and I remember waiting nervously for my credit card bill to arrive, to tell me for certain how many US Dollars it amounted to. I think this was for "Cinderella" and "Aladdin" on CD, which I had on vinyl but no record player on which to play them.

(3) Lastly, although the Tarney/Spencer Band is not The Shadows, I bought the three Tarney/Spencer Band CDs from Amazon.de which is the German site of Amazon.co and it has no English, only German -- and again, no disrespect intended. Shopping Cart = Einkaufswagen
