John Rostill - 70 today (if he'd lived)

Postby Arpeggio » 16 Jun 2012, 15:13

Came across this link & pertinent / poignant reminder from our old friend Geoff Barker:

"ON THE SHOW 2 NITE: Remembering the 70th anniversary today, of the birth of one of the Uk`s greatest bass-players, the late JOHN ROSTILL, with some of his best licks with THE SHADOWS and CLIFF. Plus: CHUCK BERRY/ROBERT GORDON/RICKY NELSON/BILLY LEE RILEY/WANDA/WEBB PIERCE/BIG TOWN PLAYBOYS/BERNIE WOODS/RUDY LA CRIOUX/RUSTI STEEL/BOYD BENNETT and more. `The Saturday Night Rock n Roll Party`: All BBC stations in the West & Southwest, On-line & Listen again. 8-10pm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/wiltshire/h ... 149795.stm) & other stations.

Geoff also recommended this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrBBd0xwzEc

Thanks for the reminder Rob. It's hard to believe that in a little under 18 month's we'll mark the 40th anniversary of John's tragic and untimely death.

One of my favourite Shads bass players.

Fingers crossed that the new edition of Rob's book does see the light of day...

A fitting tribute in my opinion.

I'm sad to say that I never knew about John Rostill while he was still amongst us, but I surely do now. I admire and respect him so much. His music with The Shadows and with Olivia Newton-John lives on.

Still a few days to catch Geoff Barker's show here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0 ... 6_06_2012/

Mostly good old Rock'n' Roll - with a few Shadows and Cliff tracks (eg "I'm The Lonely One") interspersed.

Bests.....Rob :)

By a strange coincidence, this letter and picture appeared in one of the 'better' tabloids a few days ago...

I still sometimes wonder about the "Rockin' With Curly Leads" album. If John was available for the recording sessions, the line-up on the album would have been Hank, Bruce, Brian, John and John! I wonder too if Hank and John (Rostill) ever sorted out their disagreements.

What a line up and what an album it would have been! Sadly never to be
