id like find out what cliff hall used in 1977 to 1979
and from 1980 to 1990
Cliff is one of the most amazing keyboard players. when i heard the Thank you very much concert on vinyl and heard Atlantis played it was the first time i had heard it live with a Keyboard and not a load of Violins

Hi Andrew, Arp Pro Soloist/DGX Keyboards.

In de late Seventies, Cliff used a real piano and (I think) analogue synthesizers on stage and in the studio. In de studio, he also used Fender Rhodes.

Cliff did indeed use an Arp Pro Soloist/DGX model 2721 Synthesiser during the 80's........in fact I have it here in my home. The serial number is 27210026, & in the letter of authentification Bruce says that Cliff played this keyboard on various tours, videos etc all through the 80's as part of his contribution to the sound on stage.

I have wondered about the harmonica sounds on "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues", or the saxophone sounds on "Jealous Guy". Were they played for real (special arrangements by Cliff Hall) or did they come from Cliff Hall's keyboards?

For the 1985 Australasian tour, the band equipment sent out from the UK included a Yamaha DX7, a Korg 'string synthesiser' and an ARP Pro DGX (according to the Customs manifest)

In the days before computers and digital sound mixers we built or bought our own analogue monitor mixers, in 77 I had a homemade 12 input into 4 output mixes monitor desk!! in contrast to the last 2011 Cliff tour where I used a Midas digital XL8 board with 96 inputs and 48 outputs.
Long before computers we had set lists with hand written cues. I still have my monitor notes from the 77-onward tours.
Cliff used, for the string sounds on Atlantis and Wonderful land etc the polyphonic Solina string machine, this was originally made in holland by Eminent and later taken over by ARP.
For the duet solos with Hank he used the monophonic ARP proDGX as in Flingle Bunt and the rock medley etc.
At first he used the house pianos and we fitted a Helpinstill pickup and later we toured a Yamaha CP70 piano.
It's nice to dig up my old notes to lubricate the rusty memory! JJ

I was actually listening to 'Thank You Very Much' this morning and I have to say that I think that this live album really represents Cliff Hall at his best. I love the string sound on Atlantis - indeed I'll say that it is my favourite version of this tune. Also Cliff's work on The Young Ones, Nivram, The Day I Met Marie and Apache is exemplary. Far more than just a keyboard player, he was an asset to the band. Also a great fan of his added string arrangement on the 1989 re-recorded version of 'Theme for Young Lovers' which has been retained for the live version ever since. Now the original version actually seems 'empty' somehow without them!
