The "Marvin/Bennett" Tour in the 90s

Postby donna plasky » 02 Jul 2012, 20:30

Hi, everyone. Hans' recent post has reminded me of a question I've been meaning to ask the historians in this Forum...

I see that some time in the 1990's, there was a "Marvin/Bennett" tour featuring Hank and Ben Marvin, and Warren and Brian Bennett. I've seen several video clips on YouTube. I was wondering...did they release any albums? I own what I think are all of Hank's solo albums...and some of Brian's solo albums...and I also have a few of The Vibratos' albums. But I don't believe I have anything that represents the two Marvins and two Bennetts together (and Mark Griffiths, of course :D ). Was there anything?

Thanks very much.

Kind regards,
Donna

From memory, they toured in 1994 and the show should have been recorded for video/dvd. However, a technical hitch occurred and it never made the transition and as a consequence of the failure, Hank's next tour in 1995 (Hank Live) was recorded on both video/dvd and CD. Sadly, Brian Bennett didn't feature in 1995 although there are bootleg videos/dvd of the 1994 concert in circulation.

It was indeed 1994, as Alan says. Brian and Mark played on Hank's first solo albums at that time (BB under a pseudonym on the first one) and agreed to do what was Hank's first solo tour for musical and moral support. The presence of Warren and Ben on the tour also provided a handy marketing angle.

Yes, whatever became of Jack Firestick ?
I have to admit to being somewhat taken in by his prescence on the album. I thought that he might be some native American drummer and a possible replacement for BB should he ever choose an easier lifestyle, perish the thought.
Here they are in action, one of the best Hank solo tracks in my opinion.http://youtu.be/6PG_n5Ndj1g

I have read, the group had some performance or sound problems during the first few concerts. For instance, Hank screwing up the beginning of "Jessica" and starting all over again.

A friend of mine saw them at Oxford where they performed My Home Town, which had unfortunately been dropped from the setlist by the time I saw the tour in Hereford.

I saw them on the first tour in Motherwell and the keyboard broke down during the second track. The group played Foot Tapper while they waited for the keyboard to be fixed.
Hank said a powercut had caused it to cut out and said 'We'll have a whip round for the meter!'. :D
Apart from that, it was a great show, i was in the front row right in front of Hank. I remember seeing a massive mixing desk at the back of the hall and did wonder if it was going to be recorded, it would be nice to hear.
