Here's a definition I rather like

In sympathy: relating harmoniously to something else; in keeping:
(repairs had to be in sympathy with the original structure)

Empathy: the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

Whichever, it describes the drummer's role well :)

Ringo Starr was once described as "the first drummer to play songs instead of beats" - I sometimes wonder if Tony Meehan didn't beat him to it!
