I am sure all of us who were around at the time of the first moon landing wil be saddened at the news. I know its off topic but he must be one of the most famous men in recent history, and not one to cash in on his achievments.

Yes I think though it is not Shads related there are times when we should acknowledge outstanding human achievement. Neil Armstrong, and his incredibly brave fellow astronauts, thank you. Every time I look at the moon I know that 'we' have been there thanks to these guys. Every online group should make their acknowledgement regardless of subject.

I had the rare privilege to meet him and talk to him and the other two crew members of "Apollo II" at a reception hosted by the US ambassador in Belgrade when they visited Serbia in October 1969, just two months after their lunar landing. It was an unforgetable experience.

Yes Bo, and at that meeting either you or your father were given a photo of his footmark in the dust. You kindly sent me a copy some years ago which I still have.

It was my father of course, who was deputy foreign minister in the Yugoslav Foreign Ministry at the time. Later I gave the photo, signed by the astronauts, to my son, as a memento of his grandfather.
And I still remember that great sound file with Neil Armstrong speaking, which you posted once. Do you still have it ?

So did I, it's been the one and only time I watched TV in the middle of the night !
My father met him at the Paris Le Bourget Air Show (must have been in 1971).

RIP Neil Armstrong , he will always be remembered as the 1st human being to step foot on the Moon .
He should be in the same league as Captain Cook , Scott of the Antarctic etc etc ,, great explorers.
That's one small step for man , One giant leap for mankind ,
Words that go down in history.
A true pioneer and a legend in his own time .
Never forgotten
Regards
Dave
