Hello. I thought I'd post this video...I liked it because you can see Licorice during the entire song, which is rare. On YouTube, someone typed in the comments section that this may have been Licorice's first appearance with The Shadows. At the end of the song, I thought Cliff was going to bump into Licorice if he took one more step backward.

This is a clip from the Royal Variety Performance of late 1962. The Shadows played "Wonderful Land" and went on to back Cliff on "The Young Ones" and "Do You Wanna Dance?".

Licorice of course, had joined The Shadows in April...

This is just about the only TV clip with Licorice. There's another one with C&S doing the same song for the Ed Sullivan Show but every time it goes up on YouTube it disappears, leading me to wonder whether there's a copyright owner at work.

LIc is unusually playing a Fender Jazz bass in this clip. He didn't like it because the slim neck didn't suit his big double bass player's hands.

Between "The Young Ones" and "Do You Wanna Dance?", they also performed "I'm On My Way", together with the orchestra in front of the stage.

I miss the MEAZZI sound on Hanks lead fills ! Am I right ?
Very dry - the vocals and the guitars. This is a good example
for that Hank sounds always like Hank with or without the
delay.

Here is Wonderful land by the Shadows, followed by "The Young Ones" with Cliff. I like the way Bruce introduces Cliff !



It's been told that Hank's echo box failed before the show, this why he played without it, making Wonderful Land sound unusual, particularly the muted parts !

Having heard that clip some time ago, it begs the question of how much of Hank's technique and famous sound depended heavily on the echo unit?

Tin hat definitely on now...

We must remember TV sound was rubbish in those days. This sequence suffers from it. I wouldn't blame the lads or their gear.

The orchestral 'backing', such as it is, for Wonderful Land (no horn player!) seems to go missing completely for The Young Ones!

Hello. I am realising now how much must have happened with The Shadows during the time period of 1961 and 1962. This video of "I Love You" is labelled as 1961. They still have both Jet and Tony, and Bruce is playing a guitar that doesn't seem to be a Fender -- plus Cliff still has the "teddy boy" look about him. In 1962, they had Licorice and Brian, they've all got matching Fender guitars, and Cliff looks a bit more sophisticated. I suppose I am just stating the obvious here, but the more I study The Shadows, the more things I notice and admire about them.
