Every so often, people in the public eye become known by one name alone - Jet is an obvious example.

Say ''Norrie' to anyone familiar with music of the 50s and 60s and only one person will come to mind.

So how did Norman become Norrie and why is it apparently unique to him?

(Is that Mr Bradford I hear galloping forward with the explanation? )

Ray, I know I'm going to regret owning up to this, but I used to get call Furry(Fur - as in animal - ry)

Why? because my name is Geoff, well actually Geoffrey which because I had long hair became Geoffury and finally Furry.

Similarly my friend Martin gets called, even to this day albeit he's now 67, Marty Baby.

I don't get called Furry any more, I won't say what, just that people can be very cruel, after all I only stroked that bl**dy sheep and it was a very long time ago.

I've built numerous guitars, DJ'd for far too many years, installed locks and all sorts of ironmongery, painted in acrylics and watercolours, but stroke one sheep and you're labelled for life!

Now where's my copy of The Hill Farmer?

I love nicknames, there are not always logical reasons for them.
Mine's pretty obvious, every Eric is going to be an Ecca at some point but we had a drummer who was known as 'Bov', never anything else, it was years before I knew why.
He liked Bovril crisps.
Al Bakewell is known to some of us at the Hankies as 'Fartypants'.
I don't know where that came from.

If you're name is Cameron, you might end up being called 'soap', got it?

No.

You're old enough to remember Camey soap (they might still make it), from memory it was scented.

and look a "little lovelier each day" - didnt work for me tho!

Certainly, I can't think of anyone else referred to as Norrie, but maybe be preferred it to Norm if, perhaps, he wasn't too keen on his name proper!

Camay? As with many long established brands manufactured by the likes of Procter & Gamble, Unilever, etc., it is no longer in production. Fairy Household soap has gone the same way! I recently attempted to obtain some Pyrex plain glass plates, but to no avail. Oh, dear... the frustration!!

A lot of the nicknames for famous artists are very interesting and sometimes funny. I think Brian Bennett's nickname is Benbo or Benno-San (a nice title for an instrumental ), Terence Harris is of course Jet, John Entwistle is The Ox and Thunderfingers, John Bonham is Bonzo, Alan Jones is Jonesy and John Paul Jones (John Baldwin was his original name) is also Jonesy.
