Cliff Richard's 2013 Tour

Our bass guitarist Anna and I watched Cliff Richard’s show last night at the Araneta Coliseum, here in Manila. Cliff is 72 years old, so I expected the usual old guys’ show, but thought I shouldn't miss this and also give Anna (who is younger than me) a chance to see this 1960s icon. Was I surprised. Cliff was like a teenager, dancing all the time, running up and down the steps, and never faltered. No opening act; he sang all the way from 8:00 to almost 11:00. Wonderful performance with a great deal of energy. That should give us young ones a goal to shoot for. (I'm going to the gym.)

Unfortunately, we did not have the benefit of Hank Marvin here in Manila. The sound was modern, with the lead guitarist using a sometimes overdriven guitar, played with a definitely non-vintage vibe. But it was all great; even “The Young Ones” translated very well. Cliff strapped on a guitar for several numbers; each time, he was handed a Gibson J200, similar to what I have. We all enjoyed ourselves. It was a great, spectacular show.

Unfortunately, I decided not to bring a camera. But I had my cellphone, zoomed it a bit, and took this shot.

(Cliff kept mentioning the Shadows and promised another tour to celebrate their 100th anniversary.)
