Crickettes At Pipeline

The Crickettes are gonna be great. Young Nia stepped in when the first version / incarnation of the Crickettes folded. A short while later Nia had arrived for her usual lesson with Zoe and came in on the tail end of a conversation between Pat Terrett & Zoe - bemoaning the fact that the Crickettes project appeared to be 'dead in the water' as no female rhythm guitarist was to be found. With the supreme nerve / confidence / enthusiasm of the young - Nia (who I think was still only 13 at the time) quietly but brightly opined that she thought that she could fill the rhythm guitar role. Before very long at all she was blazing her way through the relentless rhythm lines of "The Savage" with considerable aplomb. I caught Zoe & the girls at the Secombe Centre (Cheam) last November - playing a 7 - number set supporting The Fabulous Shadows. They were fantastic. Zoe's undoubted prowess is well - known. As we know - even the greatest lead players want a great band behind them. These girls have real talent. Roxy (still in her teens) has been taking professional drum / percussion lessons for 10 years or so. Although she would never say so herself (far too modest) - or maybe doesn't even realise it - she's probably one of the UK's top female drummers already. Bassist Rachel has just returned to music (having recently started a family). She's really loving the Crickettes - having spent almost five years playing bass in function / covers bands - & now playing to people who actually listen to the music! A fine, driving player - reminiscent of Suzi Quatro - well, you get the drift. Not a wild egotist - but a fine player. Nia?? Lookout everyone. Zany personality - but, as well as superb rhythm she also plays violin and keyboards to a high standard. Also a Karate Blackbelt!!! Talented or what!!??? Can't wait to hear their 15 number set. I know that Zoe, Roxy, Rachel, Nia (& Pat Terrett) are genuinely delighted / excited to be playing at Pipeline - in front of a knowledgeable / appreciative audience. Give them a huge 'Pipeline Welcome' - because it's brilliant that youngsters like the Crickettes appreciate the music we all love & grew up with & want to keep it going for a future generation.....Amen to that!!!!

This is good news.

As some of you may recall, I presented a show on the internet radio station Trent Sound called 'Girls Rock' - which was more or less self-explanatory - for about a year. I'll admit that it did tend to feature 'heavier' bands (such as Kittie, The Runaways, Girlschool, Crucified Barbara, L7, McQueen and Phantom Blue), but one of the things that blew me away was the sheer level of talent involved. I had no idea that all-girl rock bands were so good - it was an enlightening experience for me and I had my eyes (and ears!) truly opened. Such a shame when they are so casually dismissed. Although I never got to play anything by The Crickettes, I did play two or three of Zoe's tunes - from the Girls With Guitars album, I think. All the best to them for their upcoming gigs and convention appearances.

Yes, really looking forward to seeing The Crickettes. I remember Zoe from the first Shadowmania in 1998. I'll be playing with The Stingrays tomorrow so should be a great day...

A number of us from the West of Wales Shadows & Guitar Club have booked to see The Crickettes at their own concert in Porthcawl on 15 June. We were privileged to have Zoe visit our club a couple of months ago, when she played several numbers to BTs. We are really looking forward to seeing her again, meeting the rest of the band and listening to their music. Reports from Pipeline on this forum please!

Saw the Crickettes yesterday, at Pipeline.

Great set.

After a slightly mediocre version of Wipeout, their first number, they really took off and showed what energy and talent can do for instrumental, 60s based, guitar music.

The sound was good, the playing excellent and they were just a lot of fun to watch and listen to.

I really hope they stick with it. I'd love to see how they develop.
